2009年，在武漢市領導的倡導和支持下，由中國移動通信集團湖北有限公司，武漢理工新能源有限公司和武漢理工大學共同開展了“綠色基站備用電源示范項目”。
2009年11月20日，首臺通信基站燃料電池備用電源成功安裝于武漢市梁子湖畔的湖北移動的通信基站，目前已穩定運行近4年。截止2013年9月28日，基站共停電107次，燃料電池累計提供電源471小時，其中單次最長供電時間達63小時。
燃料電池備用電源的使用保證了該基站的零掉線，提高了通信的服務質量，同時也使通信基站更加綠色環保。
In Nov. 20th, 2009, the first commercialized fuel cell back-up power in China was installed in Wuhan for China Mobile communication station by Wuhan WUT New Energy Co., Ltd. and Relion Co. from USA. The 2kW fuel cell back-up Power could continuously supply approximate 36 to 42 hours power with six tanks of hydrogen as fuel.
To Sep. 28th, 2013, fuel cell has been working continuously for almost 4 years, accumulatively running to 471 hours for 107 times power grid failure, and the maximum single running time is about 63 hours. This successful demonstration was considered to greatly promote the fuel cell back-up power applied in communication stations in China.
